Who Is This For?
This is a beginner course aimed at non-data professionals who want to create well-structured data plans and requests of their data colleagues.
Any prerequisites?
- Familiar with data fundamentals, such as the difference between quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
- Familiar with the data science project lifecycle.
- Familiar with word processing tools, like Microsoft Word or Google Docs, for creating documents.
- Comfortable downloading, exporting, and uploading files.
What will I be able to do after this Course?
Create a data plan with a defined problem statement, testable hypotheses, defined data requirements, and a defined method for evaluating results.

Learning Path: Data Foundations
This course is part of Modal's Data Foundations Learning Path. Take this course individually or enroll in all three courses and take on a Capstone Project.
Course 1: Data Fundamentals
Define key terms related to data and understand foundational data concepts that help you interpret data.
Course 2: The Data Science Lifecycle
Understand how to work with data science teams, what they do, and their value to an organization.
This Course: Scoping Data Projects
Explore different types of data requests, such as one-time and continuous requests, and learn how the steps of the scientific method relate to a data plan. By the end of the course, you'll know how to formulate testable questions and hypotheses, identify your project's data requirements, and structure interpretable requests of your data teammates.
Capstone Project

We are excited that Modal now offers a deferred direct bill payment option for Booz Allen employees.
The deferred direct bill payment option enables employees to enroll in learning opportunities with no upfront costs. This payment option will require the employee to sign a Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) agreement with Modal to release grades/completion to Booz Allen to satisfy the FlexEd Program completion requirement.
